Greetings, Friends

Thank you for visiting my website.

The Sutherland Series is being produced independently through the Sudbury Publishing Group, a venture I share with my husband, Jon, who has been a professional book editor. (See bios below)

I’m an approved Goodreads Author with profiles on Amazon, Book Life, and Reedsy Discovery, where you can enjoy the first chapter of my books at no cost. (I’ve put Discovery links on my Excerpts page under MEDIA, for your convenience.)

On Twitter (X), I post in my main character’s voice, so she (Sarah Sutherland) can talk about her adventures. You can follow her/me at Sarah Sutherland Book Series @SeriesSarah.

To join us on Facebook (Meta) just send a Friend Request to Sutherland Series. There I share insights into an author’s life as well as bits of interesting research.

My blog, “Between the Lines,” is archived under MEDIA. It includes musings about writing, intriguing aspects of research, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. There are also newsworthy announcements and media mentions under this tab.

If you’re searching for my titles online, please don’t forget my middle initial: Jill C. Baker — since there are a lot of “Jill Bakers” out there. For easy ordering, there are direct links by store and title on my Buy Now page, along with reviews.

About the Author

Jill C. Baker

Jill Baker grew up in a small town in upstate New York where, as a teenager, she wrote a weekly column for the local newspaper and reviewed summer stock theater. Seeking small presses and state poetry societies, she became a published poet at an early age. She attended the College of Communication at Boston University, majoring in Broadcasting and Film, where she graduated with honors.

To pursue her career, she moved to California and began working in educational film production and distribution before joining the San Francisco Newspapers as a copywriter and AV producer. Returning to the East Coast some years later, Jill became Promotion Manager for the Boston Herald (Hearst), Middlesex News (Harte-Hanks), and the Fidelity Investments-owned Community Newspaper Company. While at the Herald, she won the international Mark E. Senigo Gold Pen Award for copywriting, presented by the New York Times and Editor & Publisher.

After a detour into the nonprofit sector, she became Director of Marketing for a digital publishing provider that served the magazine industry. Her exposure to technology has sparked ideas that are reflected in her books.

About Sudbury Publishing Group

Jonathan Baker

Jon Baker cut his publishing teeth on literary magazines and the Boston University yearbook, turning the latter from a traditional volume into a 2-part set that combined the expected student headshots with a collection of art, poetry, and photography to commemorate the cultural climate.

Upon graduation from the College of Communication, he joined Wentworth Institute in their communications office, until leaving for the West Coast. In California, he worked as an editor for textbook giant, John Wiley, and for a division of Harper & Row.

Returning to New England through a position with Little Brown, Jon became aware of the growing global publishing market. Seizing the opportunity to employ new technology, he joined Digital Equipment Corporation as a member of Digital Press, a fully functional publishing unit within the company.

During this time, he contributed to numerous award-winning professional books. To expand his skill set, he pursued technical writing and became instrumental in STC – the Society for Technical Communication. Jon served as both STC Boston Chapter president and a Director at the national level, during which time he worked for EMC as a documentation manager, and after that, as a freelance consultant in the software sector.

Jon also holds a Master’s degree in Organizational Change Management.

The Value of Reading a 200-year-old story in a 100-year-old book

(Bookmark gifted by a 3-year-old grandson who generously shared his truck stickers.) November 4, 2023 When leaves dance across the walkway and autumn’s chill is in the air, I like to take out an old copy of Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow to get in the mood for Halloween. This small-format … Continue reading The Value of Reading a 200-year-old story in a 100-year-old book

Darn. There’s a word for that.

March 19, 2023 I recently learned there was a word for the kind of leaves that ‘hung around’ after the others fell. “Marcescence” is the phenomenon, and trees such as oak, beech, and hornbeam are known to participate. These trees, with marcescent leaves, don’t drop them until spring, when a … Continue reading Darn. There’s a word for that.
